How to Create Awesome Content Marketing for a "Boring" Business

Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”

― Marilyn Monroe

Need to create Content Marketing for a really boring business?

We have compiled a definitive guide to solve this problem based on insights from four different thought leaders. You can build a comprehensive content marketing strategy for your "boring" business by following their advice.

Sarah Russell's Advice:

(Content marketer at SingleGrain)

1. Publish user case studies

Case studies are a great opportunity to assemble lots of great content around. There should be plenty of images and quotes that can go along with them.  And then you focus on telling the story.

2. Answer questions

Brainstorm up some questions that potential clients might have. And then answer them using a variety of media types. By offering answers it will naturally attract more customers.

3. Conduct interviews

Find an expert and ask them some relevant questions. People like to learn from a thought leader, and you just need to pick some interesting questions to build the interview.

Ryan Holiday's Advice:

(Author: "Trust Me, I'm Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator" and "Growth Hacker Marketing")

1. First off, is your business actually boring? Maybe you just need a fresh perspective.

2. Tell a great story. Find something interesting that happened to an employee or a customer.

3. Crazy marketing can compensate for a boring product. Don't be limited by the product range or industry. Stand out.

4. Do interesting things. Find related activities and document the journey.

5. Own what you are; honesty works. You can just be upfront and say it like it is.

6. Reframe your business. There's more than one way to look at anything.

7. You don’t have to appeal to everyone. Pick a niche to entertain.

8. Build the marketing into the product. Get creative with your product and/or the packaging.

Lauren Van Mullem's Advice:

(Co-owner of Copy Muse and Lead Content Creator @ Inturact)

1. Find inspiration in your customer's frequently asked questions. Help them solve a common problem.

2. Write about an industry study that was done by someone else

3. Use Sports analogies (or whatever you’re into)

4. Reference pop culture

5. Use humor. Everyone likes to laugh, so humor can liven up any content.

6. Talk about your pets (briefly – don’t write an entire post about the hairball your cat left on your pillow this morning – we’re talking anecdotes here)

7. Use your own personal photos instead of stock photos (and take a photography class so you don’t totally flub it)
